Ninja generally refers to "samurai" or other classes of feudal-era Japanese who acted as espionage agents. The martial arts they learnt were designed to aid escape instead of fighting. These sort of physical tactics are useful for modern self-defence applications where "fighting" is undesirable.
Three of the nine Bujinkan schools are Ninja ryuha.
